About the Artist
Tom Henderson studied with the world remounted ceramicist Gordon Baldwin and then specialised in sculpture at the university of Newcastle upon Tyne. He graduated with a BA in Fine Art in 1998. After a period in film, advertising and publishing in London he moved to Provence where he set up as a full-time artist. His work had been exhibited widely across Europe in individual and group shows, mostly in France, UK and Germany.
For many years now his art has explored the special relationships between physical flatness, spatial depth and audience interaction. He is intrigued how different combinations of objects and materials can necessitate an element of viewer participation, forcing them to actively participate in the artistic experience. In a way his compositions almost seem alive as they react to the shifting environment and natural variations of light. His art is both intellectually stimulating and pure aesthetic reduction and can be best described as poetic minimalism.

Tom Henderson, who has been based in Provence for the past fifteen years, explores the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Trained as a sculptor, he infuses his work with a tension between abstraction and materiality. His art questions the relationship between flatness, depth, and the viewer's interaction—making the spectator an essential participant in the artistic experience.
Influenced by light and movement, his works shift depending on the viewing angle. He employs a range of materials such as plywood, molded acrylic, and mirrors, which he sculpts and polishes to create ever-changing pieces. His minimalist and poetic compositions play with optical illusions and perception.
Often working in series, he delves deeply into both technical and conceptual processes, highlighting the symbiosis between painting and sculpture. His work invites viewers to rethink perspective, revealing the infinite possibilities of form within a single structure.
